Types of Triangles

October 19th, 2011

Triangles are geometric polygon shapes that have three sides as well as three angles that add up to 180 degrees. There are essentially five different types of triangles: equilateral, isosceles, right, obtuse, or acute.

Equilateral

This type of triangle has all three angles of equal degrees (60), and all of the sides are the same length.

Isosceles

Isosceles triangles have two sides and two angles that are the same length and degree. The side that is unequal to the other two is called the base.

Right

The right triangle always has one angle that is a perfect 90 degrees, and the other two angles are acute. The side of the triangle that is across from the right angle is called the hypotenuse, and the sides that are adjacent are called the legs.

Obtuse

Obtuse triangles have one angle that is over 90 degrees.

Acute

Acute triangles have angles that are all less than 90 degrees.
